Why a Vision Screening Is Not the Same as an Eye Exam
Many people think, “I passed my vision screening, so my eyes must be fine.” A vision screening can be helpful, but it only gives a limited picture. Most screenings check how clearly you see far away, but they do not fully evaluate your eye health, focusing ability, eye coordination, prescription accuracy, or signs of eye disease.
A comprehensive eye exam is different. It allows your optometrist to look deeper and assess how your eyes are functioning as a whole. Think of it like checking your blood pressure versus getting a full physical. One measurement can be useful, but it does not tell the entire story.
What We Check During a Comprehensive Eye Exam
During your exam, our doctors evaluate more than just your prescription. We look at how your eyes work, how they feel, and whether there are any signs of conditions that may need treatment or monitoring.
Your Glasses Prescription
We carefully check your vision and determine whether glasses can help you see more clearly and comfortably. This includes testing different lenses and fine-tuning your prescription based on your daily visual needs.
Whether you drive often, work on a computer, read up close, or experience eye strain, we want your prescription to support your real life.
Eye Health Evaluation
Your eye exam includes an evaluation of the front and back of the eye. This allows us to check for signs of common eye conditions such as:
-Dry eye
-Cataracts
-Glaucoma risk
-Diabetic eye changes
-Retinal concerns
-Eye allergies or irritation
-Corneal and eyelid conditions
Some eye conditions can develop slowly and may not cause obvious symptoms in the beginning. Regular exams help detect changes earlier, when they are often easier to manage.
Retinal Health and Optos Imaging
At Lux Eye Exam Optometry, we believe patients deserve to understand what is happening inside their eyes.
When appropriate, we may recommend retinal imaging with Optos, which gives our doctors a wider view of the back of the eye. This helps us document and monitor the retina over time and allows you to see what we are seeing.
This technology can be especially helpful for patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high prescriptions, flashes or floaters, family history of eye disease, or anyone who wants a more complete picture of their eye health.
Eye Pressure and Glaucoma Screening
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can develop without noticeable symptoms early on.
As part of your exam, we check your eye pressure and evaluate other risk factors related to glaucoma. If we see anything concerning, we will explain what it means and recommend the appropriate next steps.
Eye Teaming, Focusing, and Comfort
Clear vision is not only about seeing 20/20. Your eyes also need to focus properly and work together comfortably. We evaluate how your eyes coordinate, how they respond to focusing demands, and whether your symptoms may be related to digital eye strain, reading fatigue, headaches, or near-work discomfort. This is especially important for patients who spend long hours on computers, tablets, phones, or detailed close-up work.
Eye Exams for the Whole Family
We welcome patients age 5 and up. Children may not always know how to explain blurry vision, focusing problems, or eye strain. Adults may assume their vision changes are “normal” when there may be a better solution. Our job is to listen, explain, and help each patient feel confident about their care.
When Should You Schedule An Eye Exam?
You should schedule a comprehensive eye exam if you notice:
- Blurry vision Eye strain or headaches
- Difficulty seeing at night Dry, red, itchy, or irritated eyes
- Flashes, floaters, or sudden vision changes
- Trouble reading or using screens
- Squinting or frequent prescription changes
- A family history of glaucoma, diabetes, or eye disease
- You have not had an eye exam in over a year
Even if your vision feels fine, routine exams are still important because many eye health conditions do not cause symptoms right away.

Yes. Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Even if you are seeing clearly, routine eye exams can help detect problems before they affect your vision. Regular exams are an important part of maintaining your long-term eye health.
-
Optos retinal imaging is an advanced technology that captures a wide view of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The images help us document and monitor your eye health over time and may assist in detecting retinal changes that are not always visible during routine testing. It also allows you to see and better understand what we see during your exam.
